Character Descriptions

Here is a description on every character presented in the story Of Mice and Men.

George and Lennie - George is a small, smart man that is always travelling with his friend Lennie looking for jobs. Lennie is a really big guy who, unfortunately, has a mental disability. According to author John Steinbeck's descriptions, Lennie is a guy that always gets in trouble and usually cost both him and George their jobs. For example, their job in Weed previously to there job in Soledad, Lennie touches and feels a girls soft dress. Lennie loves feeling soft things and especially loves to pet animals such as dogs, mice, and rabbits. The girl, not knowing of Lennie's mental disability and the way he thinks and acts, thinks that Lennie is trying to rape her and screams for help. They both run away. George doesn't like Lennie talking to important for fear that Lennie will ruin their reputation and hurt their chances of a potential job. For example, at the ranch in Soledad when George and Lennie meet the boss, George tells Lennie to not talk for fear that Lennie will say something not good and cost them the job. Lennie is also very forgetful. George kills Lennie at the end of story because Lennie killed Curley's wife. Because of that, Curley is out to kill Lennie in the worst possible way so George kills him in an instant without Lennie dying slowly. George and Lennie are so inter-connected in this story that it was hard to talk about them separately. George and Lennie have a dream to own their own piece of land.

Curley - Curley is the boss of the ranch's son. He is a small guy and has a short temper. He likes to pick a fight with other people specifically big people such as Lennie. He knows that his dad is the boss so even if he starts a fight, the other person/people involved in the fight will be to blame instead of Curley himself. Throughout the story, Curley keeps an eye on Lennie and eventually fights Lennie. Curley hurts Lennie's face and makes it bleed. But Lennie, on George's command, fights back and break Curley's hand. Curley is persuaded into not telling his dad on Lennie for he will be laughed at and bullied around on the ranch. Later, Curley is angry towards Lennie for killing his wife and goes out to kill him. However, George kills Lennie out of mercy before Curley does.

Curley's Wife - Curley's wife isn't given a name in the book. She is very flirtatious and flirts with other people when Curley isn't around especially to George and Lennie. She is killed by Lennie. As you recall, Lennie likes touching soft things. When Lennie is in the barn playing with his new puppy and petting it, he accidentally kills the puppy. When Curley's wife comes in, she flirts with Lennie and offers Lennie to pet her hair. Lennie, being the guy he is pets her too hard and she screams for help. While Lennie tries to silence her, he accidentally kills her.

Slim - Slim is a guy that quickly becomes friends with George and Lennie. Slim is like the leader of all the ranch men. He is a the hardest worker and guides everyone in every situation. He is liked by everyone.

Carlson - Carlson is also another leader on the ranch but not as much as Slim. He isn't talked about too much in the story except when he offers to kill Candy's dog because it is too old and causes a long-lasting smell every time it enters the ranch cabin.

Candy - Candy is an old man that lost his arm in a machine. He offers George and Lennie all his savings of $350 to help pay for their piece of land they are planning to buy if they let him live with them. It is only a matter a time before Candy gets let off his job due to missing a hand.

Candy's Dog - Candy's dog is an old, ill dog that is always with Candy. Everytime the dog enters the ranch cabin, it creates a horrible smell that lasts a long time which nobody likes. Eventually, Carlson offers to kill Candy's dog and with much persuasion, Candy let's them.

Crooks - Crooks is a black man that is discriminated on the ranch. The story takes place during the 1930s, a time when nobody cared about black people. He is forced to live in crappy conditions in a small room on the barn. He is not allowed to communicate or socialize with others. He is given the horrible job of taking care of the horses and cleaning up their business. Crooks name is given to him after he crippled his back from an accident.
